Things To Do In White Bird, Idaho

 
 

 

Folks that come to White Bird to stay or visit, are not looking for fancy restaurants, shopping malls and a non stop nightlife.  People come to White Bird to relax, and enjoy the beauty of this small frontier town.  Our little village of 150 or so, consists of ranchers, farmers, cowboys, river folks and people who are interested in a quiet, peaceful life surrounded by the beauty of the Salmon and Snake River and the rolling hills filled with abundant wild life.  Listed below are some activities that you may be interested in:

 

 

Jet Boat Tours - Explore the Salmon and Snake River.  You will see wildlife, ancient rock formations and American Indian pictographs.  Enjoy the Kirkwood Historical Museum and an unforgettable ride.

 

Fishing Tour - Steelhead, Salmon, Sturgeon, Trout, Bass, the Salmon and Snake Rivers are filled with these fish and more.  Let an experienced guide take you out for a fishing trip  you won't forget.  White sand beaches line the Salmon River which is approximately 5 miles away.

 

Hunting Guides and Outfitters - Whatever game your into, be it elk, deer, big game, chukar or turkey, White Bird offers many options for people who want an experienced guide to help them.

 

Floating and Kayaking trips - Whether it's a day trip or many days trip, there are many guides in this area who offer a fun filled adventure on the water.  You can rent boats and go yourself as well.

 

Shopping - Although there is not much in the way of shopping per se, there are a few noteworthy places we recommend you visit.  the White Bird Antique Store, which will soon have the White Bird Museum intact is an excellent place to find interesting and affordable items.  They also offer trophy mounts for your walls, featuring elk and other game. The store is located at the old White Bird pharmacy, old Doc Foskett's store.  It is a beautiful store,  filled with history and variety of unusual items.  The Canyon House is a great place to find new and unusual gifts.  They also sell fishing supplies, knives, and things that may come in handy when visiting White Bird.  There is also a liquor store and a small general store for basics.  All of these stores are located in White Bird, a mere 6 miles from 'The Birdhouse'.

 

Dining - White Bird has two places to dine.  Mac's Supper Club and Hoot's.   Mac's Supper Club and Bar is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday - Sunday. It specializes in prime rib and steak, excellent homemade food, and burgers.   Hoot's also doubles as a gas station and is 4 miles from the place and is open for breakfast. Grangeville is about a 20 minute drive north and Riggins is a 30 minute drive south. 

 

Nightlife - There are two bars in town, Mac's Supper Club which has PBR and specialty beers along with liquor and the Silver Dollar which offers karaoke on the weekends with Delbert.

 

Hiking - The White Bird Battlefield is a great place to visit.  The round trip is about 1.5 miles. The trail climbs 460 feet in elevation. This place marks the beginning of the Nez Perce war with the Army.  Please bring water in the summer and stay on the path.  There are no restrooms on the trail.

 

Driving - The second deepest canyon in America is Hells Canyon.  It's a 16 mile drive in, once your cross the Salmon River and it is breathtaking. At the end of the road is Pittsburgh Landing.  There is an ancient American Indian site with pictographs and great camping spots.  It is right on the Snake River.

Rock Enthusiasts - Idaho offers many different kinds of rocks, garnets and rubies are a common find.
